- heat - from the sun or from work-related sources.
- cold - especially during winter and of course in places where the weather conditions are cold.
- sunlight - used as sun visor to prevent an accidental glare from the sun.
- falling debris - a hard-hat is just the right item here.
- wind - a steady and strong cold gust of wind can make our head cold.
- ashes - like when a volcano near you spew ashes.
- dust and dirt - when you frequently pass along a dirt road and dust and dirt flies like hell.
- insects - when you're in a place where mosquitoes, flies and/or other insects flies regularly.
- chemicals - some environment or work place require mandatory protective headwear.
- head injury - when you ride your bike daily you should edc a helmet. It's for your own protection.
- rain - when there's no other way and you have to head on a rain or drizzle and you've got no umbrella.
- surprised attacks - you can use your hat as distraction or self-defense weapon.
But some wear it for fashion statement only.
